This allows you to set the level of security on the program as well as the default data base. The encryption routine is not that secure. For maximum security use a real encryption program.
Password.
An invalid password entered at startup will prevent the program from running.
When entering the password a filler character is shown in the entry field. If you check the Show Characters box, then the actual characters are displayed in the entry field. This may cause a security problem if someone is looking over your shoulder when you enter your password.
You may elect to have the program close it's windows and require the password to be re-entered after a given amount of inactivity (1 to 30 minutes).

Encryption.
Encryption sets the password for the default data base. This password forms a part of the encryption key. It is recommended that you do not encrypt the data base. For maximum security you should buy a product designed specifically for protecting data from prying eyes. The encryption algorithm is a simple one used to protect your data from accidentally being seen (such as in recovering data from a crashed hard drive).
Encrypting memory will drasticly slow down Home Accounting. Encrypting the File only affects Home Acounting when saving and loading preferences.
If you set the security level to encrypt file and memory, then the default data base entries will not be affected untill you either close the view (by switching or closing the Preferences window) or click the Apply button.
The address book data base is also affected by the encryption system.
